The Big Five animals of Africa include the African elephant, rhinoceros, lion, leopard, and buffalo. These five big game animal species are found on the African continent in the Southern and Eastern parts of Africa. But, as the name suggests, they are not the heaviest or the five most giant safari animals.
If the weight or size identifies the big five animal, a hippo or a gorilla could be among the big five. For example, a hippo can weigh three times the size of a buffalo, and a gorilla weighs the same as a male lion.
When we refer to the “Big Five,” it originated from hunters. The most difficult to hunt were the lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and African buffalo. These five large African animals were known to be dangerous, and it was considered a win by trophy hunters to bring the trophies home.
Animal ivory was and is still in high demand and can fetch a lot of money; thus, the elephant is endangered. These animals were hunted and still are, making the population very low. The hunters would have wiped out these important animals because of their greed. Thanks to conservatism which has tried to protect these animals.
The term ‘Big Five’ today goes with the word safari(travel), mainly used by tour operators trying to sell Africa to the outside world. It also tries to exclaim the most significant animals you will find on safari to Africa.
Considering that the “big five” are found in Africa, for example, in Kenya, most National Pakr host the “big five” or the “big four.”
